How to choose a sim racing wheel
Wheel versus wheelbase
This is the one most people get caught on. The wheel is the rim you hold. The wheelbase is the motor unit it bolts onto, and that is what creates the force feedback you feel. Most wheels on this page are rims that attach to a wheelbase through a quick release, so you need both to drive. Some listings are sold as a wheel and base together, which is the simplest way to start.
Formula, GT and rally styles
- Formula wheels are compact and rectangular or D-shaped, with dense button layouts, built for open-wheel racing.
- GT wheels are round or D-shaped with a central grip, suited to GT and endurance racing, often with a screen.
- Larger round wheels suit rally and drift, where you turn more lock.
Materials
Alcantara or suede gives a high-grip, competition feel. Leather is comfortable and hard-wearing for long stints. Carbon fibre keeps the wheel light and rigid, which sharpens the feedback coming through the base.
Quick release and compatibility
Wheels attach to a base through a quick release, so you can swap them in seconds. Compatibility depends on the base and the quick release standard, and many wheels work across brands with the right adapter. Check the specific wheel and base, or ask us and we will confirm the fit.
Budget
The range runs from entry-level rims through to high-end carbon and licensed replica wheels. Today’s high-end sim racing steering wheels are often modelled after or even licensed from real motorsport hardware – same layout, same materials, same build quality. The main difference? One controls a car, the other controls a simulator. But with the right setup, you’ll have to remind yourself which one you’re in.
